Biodiesel for a Just Energy Transition

Jars filled with used cooking oil (UCO), a raw material for biodiesel production.

The conversation around palm oil-based biodiesel in Indonesia is not just about energy—it’s about whose voices are heard and whose are left behind. For too long, the dominant narrative has been shaped by government and large industry players, promoting promises of farmer prosperity and emissions reduction. But the reality on the ground is far more complex.

Through a collaborative approach with civil society organizations, Traction is working to build a counter-narrative—one grounded in data, committed to social justice, and focused on environmental sustainability. At the heart of this strategy is a call for biodiesel policies that are more transparent, equitable for independent smallholders, and environmentally responsible.

The Traction Energy Asia team with Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan during a used cooking oil collection event at PT Bali Hijau Biodiesel.

At Traction, we believe communication is not just about delivering messages—it’s about shaping influence. Using social media, public discussions, media partnerships, and narrative campaigns, we aim to open inclusive dialogue—spanning from upstream to downstream in the biodiesel value chain.

This strategy also addresses long-term policy challenges: from engaging smallholder farmers and limiting new land clearing, to enforcing methane capture and building a clear roadmap toward clean energy.

Traction is not here to oppose—but to partner in building an energy future that is truly sustainable and just for all Indonesians.
